Solar scaffolding vs roof ladders: which is right?

Every so often a homeowner asks whether the solar install could be done off roof ladders to save the scaffolding cost. It is a fair question, and the honest answer is that for a panel install the two are not really alternatives — they solve different problems.

A roof ladder gives you a route up the slope. It gives you no edge protection, no platform to set tools or components down on, and no safe way to handle a 20kg module in wind. Scaffolding provides a boarded platform, guardrails and toe boards along the whole array elevation, which is what the Work at Height Regulations expect where a fall risk cannot be avoided.

Scaffolding costs money up front — typically £350 to £900 on a domestic property. Roof ladders cost almost nothing. But an install carried out from ladders takes considerably longer because every component has to be carried up individually, and a crew that loses half a day has usually erased the saving.

For installers running multiple jobs a week, the maths is not close. Scaffold access is what makes a one-day install a one-day install.

Most installer public liability policies and MCS scheme requirements assume compliant access arrangements. An accident during ladder-only working can put a claim, an MCS registration and a warranty at risk simultaneously.
